Gargoyle Gecko Lighting and Temperature

Reptiles are cold blooded so it is important that you provide the proper temperature ranges that they need to exist and be comfortable. Using a thermometer and humidity gauge is essential.

If you want to also have live plants inside your setup or terrarium or vivarium, you should also look to add a UVA lamp, so using a fluorescent tube works best and a T5 is most efficient. Gargoyles tend to rest in cork bark, or cork rounds or some sort of tree foliage sleeping and relaxing during the day, but being active in the evenings and throughout the night. So long as you provide vitamin D3 based diet, like Pangea or Repashe, UV light is not required.

Although heat is not necessary, maintaining room temperature is!

The easiest way to provide heat is a low wattage incandescent bulb or a reptile ceramic heater or ceramic heat emitter in a reflector type fixture placed on the screen top over one side of the tank so that the temperature of basking areas (branches) reaches the desired range. Because you must always keep one side of the tank unheated so that gargoyle geckos for sale can choose a cooler area to regulate their body temperature. Lastly, you can also use a sub-tank reptile heat pad or heat tape under one side of the tank regulated by a thermostat.

Gargoyle Water and Humidity

Water should always be available for gargoyle geckos in a shallow water dish. These geckos also require a relative humidity of at least 50 percent and preferably 70 percent. In a dryer areas the tanks should be lightly misted nightly or a cool air humidifier placed in the room. Inexpensive hygrometers (relative humidity gauges) for use with reptiles are now readily available in the pet trade.

Gargoyle Gecko Handling and Temperament

Keep in mind geckos may bite when they are young to subadult, but seldom when adult as they calm down quickly. Because they have long sharp teeth and their bites will result in superficial skin lacerations that could possibly bleed. Fortunately, they bite as a warning and quickly let go. An adult gargoyle gecko for sale can be expected to be mellow. For these reasons, baby gargoyle geckos rank among the best of lizard pets.

Gargoyle Gecko Tails

In nature, gargoyle geckos will usually lose their tails and end up with a tiny pointed tail nub. “Taillessness” is a normal condition for adults gargoyle geckos. In captivity, hobbyists like their gargoyle geckos for sale with tails, but this requires keeping animals individually and pampered to prevent tail loss.

Gargoyles are notorious for plucking off each other’ss tails and the tailless condition occurs during at least part of the year when this species is kept in groups. Keep in mind this is such a normal phenomenon with gargoyle geckos that they are commonly sold as tailless in the trade without any discount. On the bright side, gargoyles will readily regenerate tails, which besides a difference in scalation, end up looking like the originals.
