What is Heineken 0.0 Non-Alcoholic (NA)?

Brewing a great-tasting 0.0% alcohol-free malt beverage, is it even possible? Apparently, it is because that is exactly what Heineken did with its “0.0” (Double Zero) alcohol-free lager.

There used to be a time where beer was beer, and alcohol was alcohol. Not anymore, though. Now, there are variants of beer and alcohol, depending on their ABV (alcohol by volume). One such variant is the alcohol-free beer, which contains no more than 0.05% ABV.

Heineken 0.0 (Double Zero) is Heineken’s flagship entry into the industry of non-alcoholic beer. The beer lager has the same refreshing, fruity notes Heineken beers have, but without the alcohol. Heineken 0.0 is double brewed, and the alcohol is removed after the production process. According to Heineken, the beer contains no more than 0.03% of alcohol, which in reality is absolutely negligible.

Although Heineken 0.0 made its debut four years ago, research into the beer dates back many years ago. The company’s brewers conducted extensive research to ensure the beer lives up to expectations, and it is fair to say the effort was worth it.

Production of Heineken 0.0Non-Alcoholic (NA)

There are several ways of producing alcohol-free beer, falling into two broad categories. The first is preventing the formation of alcohol in the beer at all, and the other is removing alcohol after the beer has formed. Heineken favored the latter for Heineken Double Zero.

The technique for preparing Heineken 0.0 is vacuum distillation. This involves heating the beer to remove the alcohol. The principle behind all of this is the lower boiling point of alcohol than water. Essentially, heating the beer will rid it of its alcohol. Heating it in a vacuum is even better, as it preserves the physical integrity of the beer by lowering the boiling point of alcohol.

This is just an overview of the process, though. There are other procedures Heineken utilizes, but they are keeping that from the public to keep their competitive edge. You don’t want to make your rivals better!

After heating the beer, alcohol is lost, but so is some of the taste and aroma. Heineken restores this to the beer by adding natural flavorings. The product is a beer that looks and tastes exactly like its alcoholic counterparts.

How is Heineken 0.0 different from alcoholic Heineken

Assume there are two cups in front of you now. One contains Heineken 0.0 (aka Heineken Double Zero), and the other contains alcoholic Heineken. It doesn’t matter how big a fan you are of Heineken beers; you will not be able to tell the difference between the two by mere looking. They look exactly the same.

What if you taste them? Same result. Go on, try to prove us wrong.

Heineken put so much effort into ensuring the 0.0 is similar to its other beers in taste and appearance, and it paid off quite well. In essence, the 0.0 retains the characteristic golden amber color, with a head that dispels rather quickly and the same fruity, malty aroma.

So, how then can you tell them apart, you ask? The label and cap of the bottles. To differentiate the 0.0 from alcoholic beers, Heineken has made its label and cap blue rather than the traditional white and green.

However, some have claimed there is a distinct aftertaste of the 0.0. This may simply be due to a placebo effect – basically, experiencing something because you expect to experience it. Notwithstanding, chances are very high that regular drinkers will notice no difference at all.

Another difference, of course, is the absence of alcohol from 0.0. The company states that it contains no more than 0.03% ABV. That’s about as low as you can get.

Is Heineken 0.0 safe During Pregnancy And Breastfeeding?

Alcohol’s PR isn’t too great in society today, especially among pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and people with existing health conditions. Let’s call them the “special populations” In fact, the CDC outrightly discourages any form of alcohol in pregnant women. But do the same rules apply to Heineken 0.0?

Heineken says no, and we are inclined to say no too. Here’s why. 0.03% of alcohol is negligible. Some foods contain far more ABV than that. Saying that Heineken 0.0 (Heineken Double Zero) is bad for our special populations is like saying bananas and bread are bad for them because these foods contain even more ABV.

However, because the taste and appearance are exactly the same as Heineken’s alcoholic beers, we will advise our special populations only to take the ones they open themselves. Don’t just take people’s words for it and drink without knowing the source of the drink; you can’t be too safe.

As far as availability goes, Heineken 0.0 is technically okay for all populations. But Heineken itself discourages selling any of their products to people below 18 because that isn’t their target audience. We can’t fault that because underage individuals getting familiar with the taste of beer can push them to try the real deal.

Also, you can take Heineken 0.0 while driving. There is a completely zero risk of drunkenness unless you’re willing to down 8 gallons in an hour. We are confident you cannot, and please don’t try to prove us wrong.

While 0.0 wouldn’t get you drunk or even slightly “buzzed,” you may have some explaining to do if caught by law enforcement officers because of its similarity to Heineken’s alcoholic beers.

Like most non-alcoholic beers, this one won’t give you a beer belly.

When to drink Heineken 0.0Non-Alcoholic (NA)

Because of the virtually non-existent alcohol content of the drink, it is compatible with all foods and even medications. If you can, stick to water for medications, though. That’s not even a Heineken or beer thing, it’s a health thing.

The drink is refreshing and will work for every occasion regular beer works for, including games, bars, or just cool, relaxing evenings.

What do drinkers think of Heineken 0.0Non-Alcoholic (NA)?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the taste and appearance of Heineken 0.0 are exactly the same as Heineken Original beers. This means drinkers, even ardent ones, have little to complain about in the taste and aroma departments. A few drinkers notice a distinct aftertaste, but that is still nothing to complain-worthy.

The consensus is that 0.0 is a good drink and is perfect for heavy drinkers looking to cut down on alcohol intake without relinquishing the glorious taste of beer.
